Background

Environmental sustainability means consuming natural resources no faster than they are replaced. Sustainability is essential to maintain environmental assets for future generations.

Countries in the early stages of development often lack the resources or knowledge to sustainably manage their natural resources. Governments of developing countries also face strong pressures to reduce poverty, if necessary by sacrificing environmental sustainability. Australia's aid program can assist by demonstrating approaches that facilitate economic growth and minimise harm to the environment.
