Gender and development facts |
- The combined primary and secondary enrolment of girls
has increased from 38 percent in 1970 to 68 percent in 1992.
- A 10 percent increase in girls' primary education can be
expected to decrease infant mortality by 4.1 deaths per 1000.
- About 1.3 billion people live in poverty, more than 70 percent
of them are female.
- Women represent 41 percent of all workers in
developing countries, however their wages are 30-40 percent less
than those of men for comparable work.
- Adult women suffer more than men from malnutrition. Girls
are twice as likely to die from malnutrition and
preventable childhood diseases than boys.
- Globally, women hold only 10 percent of all seats in
national parliaments, and only 6 percent in national cabinet.
