Media releases are regularly distributed on a wide range of global issues. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer, and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Kay Patterson, issue releases every month. The Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile, distributes releases on trade related issues.

Volcano exploding
The day the world changed for the people of Rabaul on 19 September 1994. This photograph caputures the event as it happened, with Mt Vulcan spewing out ash and pyroclastic material.

Media releases address current issues. They are full of useful facts and figures that can help you get a picture of what is happening on these issues. One of the most useful things about media releases is that they are an immediate source of information as events develop. Your students may have seen an item on the news about a crisis in a developing country. Using these media releases, you will be able to respond to them promptly and provide accurate, reliable information.

Media releases can also be used to supplement and update information you are using when studying a particular country or issue. If you are studying East Timor for example, you will find a great deal of information about the latest developments involved in rebuilding East Timor.

This page also links to a number of speeches that provide detailed information about current issues and Australia's relationships with other countries. Recent and archived speeches from Mr Downer, Senator Patterson and Mr Vaile are available.
