Mission mosquito
Case study
- Imagine that you are a family in a rural village in Solomon
Islands. One of the children seems to have Malaria. Through a drama
show how they caught the disease and what the family does
in response.
- Design and construct a hanging mobile which shows how Malaria,
Dengue Fever or Filariasis is carried by mosquitoes and infects people.
- Interview some older Australians about what they know about
diseases we have mostly ended in Australia such as Polio
and Tuberculosis. How did we put a stop to those diseases in Australia?
- Individually design an awareness-raising poster for the people
in Matrina's village which encourages people to use bed nets to
avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
- Locate Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu on a map. What can you
tell about the environment and the climate of these countries from
the map?
- Locate pictures of either Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
After looking at these pictures, imagine that you are visiting
this Pacific country, write a postcard back to your friends
describing the environment.
- Construct a model of a village environment. Locate all the
possible places where stagnant (still) water might occur.
What suggestions would you make to reduce the amount of stagnant water
in the village?
- Use the following words to create a find a word puzzle :
mosquito, vector, toxin, disease, repellent, Fiji, Vanuatu,
Solomon Islands, stagnant, bed net, malaria, dengue fever, filariasis.
- Write a letter to Matrina describing to her how our government
and the Australian people are trying to work with the people of
Solomon Islands to solve the problems of diseases such as malaria,
dengue fever and filariasis.
- Use the information in the case study and undertake some
other research to design a board game called `Conquering Mozzies'!
