Keeping Pests out of Tonga
Student Activities

- Find Tonga on the map. Describe its location to a partner by naming the countries (this includes island groups) to the north, south, east and west and the ocean in which it is found.
- Find out more about quarantine:

b) Write five key points about quarantine in your country eg
What things do travellers have to declare on the form for the customs officers at the airport or port?
Which of these relate to quarantine?
Which pests and diseases are particularly important for your area or country?
- Interview a visiting quarantine officer or a customs agent, airline or airport crew, shipping crew, visit a quarantine station or write to a quarantine department.
a) Make a list of questions you would like answered.
b) Carry out the interview or review the materials sent to you and provided by your teacher.
- List the strategies being carried out in the Tonga Quarantine Project.
- Research a disease or pest such as the fruit fly and the effect it has on crops.
a) Make a consequence chart to show the effects of the fruit fly on the crop, the farmer, the community, the country and other countries if it is not controlled.
b) Make a consequence chart to show the effects when it is controlled.
- Make posters for display at assembly and around the school explaining the importance of quarantine and the steps that can be taken by travellers to help as well as some important strategies being carried out by the quarantine service in your area or country.
