Teacher's Notes
  1. Find Vietnam in an atlas (click here). Describe its location to a partner by naming the countries to the north, south, east and west and the oceans nearby. Play location games such as "I am thinking of a place in Vietnam that . . ." (eg begins with H, is in the north).

  2. Research the climate and landforms of Vietnam. List the foods produced there.

  3. View the video, Iodine Deficiency Control Project: Vietnam. In pairs, list:

    1. the problems caused by iodine deficiency

    2. the solutions proposed by the Iodine Deficiency Control Project.

  4. Read the case study, "Iodine to the rescue".

    Add to your list of problems caused by iodine deficiency. Add to your list of solutions.

    Discuss with your partner, the reasons why Vietnamese soil lacks iodine.

  5. Join with another pair and share your lists. Draw a mind map to show the effects of heavy rain and flooding on the soil, agricultural animals and people in Vietnam.

    Draw another mind map to show the solutions and the effects of those.

  6. Display your pairs of mind maps as a class and look for similarities and differences.
