A literacy program for women in China - the key to improving health
Read the case study and complete the following activities:
- Use an atlas to locate Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and describe its location in China.
- Imagine you are responsible for the development of the content of the literacy program. Outline the health messages you would include in the program and justify your choice.
- CARE Australia believes that this strategy will contribute to the alleviation of poverty for minority women in China. Draw a flow chart or diagram which shows how this strategy might help alleviate poverty.
- Work in groups of three or four and select one stage of the life span and investigate how literacy in women could optimise development and health at this stage of the life span. Present the information back to the class.
- Would the project described in the case study be an example of short term or long term aid? Explain.
Evaluating the project
- (a) An effective aid project is one that assists in promoting sustainable development and independence rather than a dependency on 'handouts'.
In small groups brainstorm the key elements of an effective aid project. Record your responses on large sheets of paper. Share your ideas with the rest of the class.
Draw up a table that includes each of these key elements. Beside each, place a tick in the appropriate column to indicate that it is evident in the literacy project. Write a brief comment in the final column to explain how that element is evident. An example of how the table could be constructed is shown below.
| Key elements of an effective aid project | Evident in Literacy Project | How it is evident in project |
| Community involvement and participation | | |
| Project is appropriate to the needs of the people | | |
(b) Use the information in the table above to draw conclusions about the likely effectiveness of this project.
