The global environment facility: China

Case Study Teacher's Notes

Student Activities

  1. Brainstorm in small groups the environmental and social consequences of expanding deserts, the depletion of the ozone layer, collapsing fisheries, a scarcity of fresh water and an increasing rate of plant and animal extinctions. Report back your group’s ideas to the rest of the class.
  2. Explain in your own terms the concept of intergenerational equity. In one page, indicate and justify your views on whether the current generation has any responsibility to those who will come after us.
  3. How does sustainable development contribute to intergenerational equity?
  4. For each of the four critical threats to the global environment, explain what needs to occur for sustainable development in this area to be achieved.
  5. Why is an international organisation like the Global Environment Facility important in dealing with these environmental problems?
  6. What is the role of global environmental conventions and protocols in the work of GEF? Discuss using specific examples.
  7. List the environmental benefits of the GEF Renewable Energy Project in China. Classify them as either local or global.
  8. Conduct further research into one of the five alternative energy technologies being developed in the Chinese project. Briefly explain how each system operates.
  9. Use the GEF website to investigate other international projects. Prepare a short oral presentation on a specific project addressing biodiversity.
