Good Reasons to Compost (Ck.Is. Conservation Service Brochure)

Composting is a way of copying nature.

  • Turn all your garden rubbish and food scraps into plant food.
  • Save valuable space in our overfilled dump,sites.
  • Improve your garden soil and make your own potting mix.
  • Save money on fertilisers and other chemicals.

Composting is the breakdown of plant material by very small animals and bacteria into healthy garden soil.

Conditions

  1. Cleanest Home in each Village

    Each home may have the following:

    1. a clean and tidy yard
    2. proper disposal for rubbish i.e.

      • a hole for rubbish
      • drum or other container for rubbish collection
      • incentive for recycling
      • compost heap

      `

    3. rubbish heap or hole must not be within 5m of streams or within 30m from the high water mark on the beach
    4. no animals tied in streams or within 50m of the house
    5. have a home garden which includes vegetables and fruits
    6. no leaking taps

  2. Cleanest School

    1. clean and tidy schoolyards and playgrounds
    2. have incentives for recycling or reusing
    3. proper rubbish containers

  3. Most Environmentally Friendly Business

    1. proper rubbish disposal unit
    2. clean and tidy and free of flies
    3. incentives for recycling and reusing
    4. containers for rubbish collection

  4. Cleanest Sporting Facility

    1. clean and tidy sports grounds
    2. well maintained and clean drainage system
    3. enough rubbish containers within the grounds
    4. well maintained surrounding areas - beaches, streams etc.

Best Overall Area.

  1. majority of homes participated and are clean
  2. majority of homes have no leaking taps
  3. streams and drainage kept free of rubbish
  4. high number of home gardens
  5. local beaches clear of household rubbish
  6. public places clear of rubbish especially roadsides,graveyards etc.

The Tutaka lasts for two weeks.
