Teacher's Notes

  1. Read the case study, After the Tidal Wave. If possible, view the video, Water for Life.

  2. Locate Indonesia on a map. (Click here to view map.) Describe its location in southeast Asia

    1. Find a map showing world earthquake zones and volcanic eruptions
    2. Find a map showing plate tectonics
    3. Describe the effects of the above on the landforms and lives of people in Flores.

  3. Imagine you are one of the Flores Water Supply and Sanitation Project designers. Write a report including the following:

    1. Rationale (Why should AusAID assist the people of Flores?)
    2. Background (Describe the geography of Flores and the effects of the earthquake and tidal wave.)
    3. Project goals (Describe what needs to be achieved in this project)
    4. Roles and responsibilities (List the roles and responsibilities of:

      1. the Indonesian Government
      2. the Australian Government (through AusAID)
      3. AusAID project members

    5. Project outcomes (Describe the short term and long term benefits of the project.)

  4. Imagine you live in a Flores community. You have identified the need to educate your community about health practices. Design posters to use in your health education program to show:

    1. ways of keeping the water supply clean
    2. how diseases commonly found in Flores are spread and how to avoid them. (You will need to research these diseases. Group members could select a different disease to research and share their findings. )
