- Study Figure 1. Describe the location of the earthquake epicentre.
- Study the text. What is the difference between the focus and epicentre of an earthquake? Draw a diagram to show this difference.
- Describe the difference between aftershocks and tremors. Illustrate this on the diagram you produced in response to question 2a.
- Why did locations 80 kilometres from the epicentre suffer from the earthquake?
- Study Table 1, which shows the damage to infrastructure. If you were in charge of the restoration program, which aspect of infrastructure do you think is the most important to repair/replace first? Which would be the hardest to repair/replace? Fully explain your answers.

- Locate Gujarat State. Describe the location of the most earthquake-prone region within the state.
- How many regions are there in the 'most earthquake-prone' category?
- Go to Australian Humanitarian and Emergency Aid Program at http://www.ausaid.gov.au/human
- Go to Introduction. How much money will the Australian Government provide to help relieve human suffering in the period 2000-2001? What are four causes of human suffering?
- Scroll down to Emergencies. Prepare a table that lists the emergencies Australia has provided aid for. In the left column list the emergencies the Australian Government has responded to, and in the second column, classify each one according to the four causes of human suffering you identified in 6a.
- Scroll down to How can Australians help? Why is it best to give money rather than food? When should clothing, footwear, medicines be given?
