Teacher's Notes   Case Study

  1. Investigate and research what a Traditional Birth Attendant (TBA) might have in their 'safe delivery kit'. Contact midwives, your local community health centre or local hospital to seek advice and information about equipment needed for home births here in Australia. Present a list of equipment which, based on your research, you would consider an adequate, cost effective kit to maintain in Laos.

  2. I pairs, discuss the operational aspects of a Revolving Drug Fund (RDF). What are the advantages and disadvantages of establishing such a fund? What approaches or solutions would you suggest to minimise the disadvantages of a RDF? Pool your ideas as a whole class.

  3. You have been approached by the Sayaboury Provincial Health Management Team to develop five sequential visual posters on immunisation. The posters are intended to be used at village level by mobile clinics to assist illiterate villagers to be aware of the need to be involved in an immunisation program for their children. Develop a presentation for the Provincial Health Team around your poster proposal.

  4. In order to track and monitor the impact of the Save the Children Fund/AusAID project on health levels of the population and their on-going needs, important information needs to be recorded by health workers. In small groups, develop a 'Monthly Report Form' to be used by Village Health Volunteers (VHV) and Dispensary staff. What categories of information will be essential?

  5. Use your knowledge about Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS from PD/ Health/ PE classes and any other research, particularly interviews with health workers in your local area. Discuss what specific training health workers in Laos might need in this field to help them prepare and treat such patients appropriately.

  6. Although Malaria is the major local health problem in Sayaboury Province, there is a lack of information about its epidemiology (the spread of the disease). Hold a class forum to discuss what data you think the Provincial Health Management Team should collect about the current transmission and treatment of Malaria and how they might collect this.

  7. Use the internet to access the Save the Children Fund Australia web site. Look at the information given on this project in Laos. Examine the information on the Integrated Village Development. Outline why this arm of the project is a crucial aspect in improving the overall health of the population?

  8. Invite a representative from your local or district blood bank to speak with the class about how the blood bank operates. After the visit, form into small groups in the role of the Sayaboury Provincial Health Management Team. You are at the stage in the project of developing the proposal for Save the Children Fund & AusAID to support the establishment of a blood bank with blood borne virus testing facilities. Develop a brief project proposal for the blood bank including the following : i. purpose of the Blood Bank ii. foreseeable difficulties or problems and strategies to address these iii. staff training needs iv. financial sustainability of the bank v. benefits to the population.

  9. Locate some detailed maps of Laos. Copy the map and highlight Sayaboury Province. List what you can discern about the geophysical nature of the province. How might these geophysical features impact on the population's access to adequate health care?

  10. Contact or invite a representative from one of your local community health centres to visit the class to speak about perinatal (before and after birth) maternal and child health care needs. Use this and the case study information to develop a day program for the Sayaboury Province Maternal and Child Health Care Mobile Outreach teams to use when they visit villages every three months.
