EDZI TOTO - Say no to Aids
HIV/AIDS prevention for youth in Malawi
Student Activities
Click on either of these two links for further information about
this case study:
- Find Malawi and the neighbouring countries on the map or atlas.
Using resources collected, piece together a brief history of Malawi
and its recent (last ten years) politics.
- What is the population of Malawi?
- Discuss the literature collected about HIV/AIDS. What are the
rates of infection for Australia? How is it spread?
- HIV/AIDS programs in Malawi have contributed to 85-92%
awareness, however there is little evidence to suggest that
this heightened awareness has translated to significant behaviour
change. For example, condom use is extremely limited with only 6% of
men, 3% of
women and less than 1% of youth having access to, and using,
condoms. What cultural, religious & economic impediments do you think
may prevent people from taking action to protect themselves from AIDS?
Discuss the education program presented in the case study.
How does it differ from conventional education?
- Which form of education
do the students think is most productive? Would this vary according
to the situation?
- With a partner discuss an appropriate HIV/AIDS education activity
for your class. Present this to the class. The activity should be:
- no longer than five minutes;
- involve the class in a small activity.
