Teachers Notes
  1. Read the first section of the case study, Dogs track hidden killers.

  2. Locate regions affected by landmines on a map. Discuss the prevalence.

  3. Make a chart with two columns:
    Problems caused by landmines
    Benefits of demining
    Under the first column list the problems (unseen costs) in each of the categories given ie medical, refugees and repatriation, economic, environmental, security. Add the costs or problems which are seen eg loss of own life or family members, loss of property.
    In the second column list the benefits when there are no land mines eg no victims, savings in medical costs because people do not need treatment, people able to provide for themselves.


  4. Read Australia's role in assisting mine affected countries and Mine Dog Detection Project in Mozambique.

  5. Write an exposition arguing for the advantages of using well trained dogs and handlers to detect landmines.

  6. Make posters or prepare a short presentation for assembly showing why landmines should be banned.
