Teacher's Notes

  1. Research the physical features, resources, industries and transport networks in Papua New Guinea. This will provide you with background information about why the Butibum Bridge Project is so important.

  2. The Butibum Bridge Project is part of the Highlands Highway Upgrading Project. Read the primary case study, Building bridges in Papua New Guinea to find out why the Government of Papua New Guinea considers it a priority.

  3. Locate Papua New Guinea on a map. Locate the highlands and Lae, Goroka, Kundiawa, Mt Hagen and Mendi. The Highlands Highway goes through these towns and further into the highlands.

  4. Read the case study "The Butibum Bridge Project in Papua New Guinea." Imagine you are one of the Butibum Bridge Project designers. Write a report including the following:

    1. Rationale (Why should AusAID assist the Government of Papua New Guinea to build the bridge as part of the Highlands Highway upgrading project? How does it benefit Papua New Guinea? How does it benefit Australia?)

    2. Background (Describe the geography of Lae and the highlands.)

    3. Project goals (Describe what needs to be achieved in this project.)

    4. Project outcomes (Describe the short term and long term benefits of the project under the following headings - economic, social, political.)
