Sustainable tuna fishing in the South Pacific
Teacher's Notes
Overview
This case study addresses the Victorian Geography VCE Unit 3 (Resources), the focus of which is the nature and distribution of resources and the ways in which resources may be used and managed. The focus of this case study is the importance of fishery resources, especially tuna, to the island countries of the South Pacific, and the efforts being made to manage this resource in a sustainable manner.

Objectives
Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
- ways of classifying tuna as a resource
- positive and negative impacts of resource use on people and the environment
- factors that affect the sustainable development of fishery resources in the South Pacific
- criteria to assess the effectiveness of management policy in regulating the use of fishery stocks in the South Pacific
- Key Geographic Ideas - location, distribution, scale, region, spatial association
- the following terms: EEZ, High Seas, distant water fishing nations, FFA, SPC, VMS, MHLC.
Students should demonstrate the ability to:
- establish and justify criteria to evaluate management policies
- use Key Geographic Ideas - location, distribution, scale, region, spatial association
- identify, locate and extract data from a range of information sources
Preparation
- Introductory work on the problems of overfishing on the global scale and the concept of sustainability.
- Students will need appropriate equipment to construct two chloropleth maps using three colours.
Procedure
The role of the teacher is largely that of facilitator. The class teacher needs to provide each student with two copies of a map showing FFA members. To do this, go to the FFA homepage at http://www.ffa.int, then go to Members and print off the map.
