On June 29 2006, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Declaration was thus forwarded to the UN General Assembly for its final approval. Adoption of the Declaration would be a major step towards eliminating the widespread human rights violations suffered by over 370 million Indigenous people worldwide. The Draft Declaration is a long and complex document. It recognises the wide range of basic human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples. Among these are the right to unrestricted self-determination, an inalienable collective right to the ownership, use and control of lands, territories and other natural resources.
