The United Nations Collaborative initiative on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) Programme was launched in 2008 to assist developing countries prepare and implement national REDD+ strategies. It brings together technical teams from around the world to help develop analyses and guidelines on issues such as measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of carbon emissions and flows, ensuring that forests continue to provide multiple benefits for livelihoods and the environment, and supporting the engagement of Indigenous Peoples and Civil Society at all stages of the design and implementation of REDD+ strategies.

Agroforestry is the incorporation of trees into farms for environmental and economical purposes. Trees planted on farms work to fertilise the soils, provide nutritional supplements through their fruit and oils, provide farmers with additional cash crops, reduce carbon emissions and improve water supply and quality on farms. The World Agroforestry Centre promotes the uptake of agro forestry to counter the environmental impact of deforestation. Almost half of the world?s farms have dedicated 10% of their land to agro forestry.
