The 2006 White Paper, Australian Aid: Promoting Growth and Stability provides the strategic framework to guide the direction and delivery of Australia's overseas aid program over the next ten years. A combination of infrastructure, health and education initiatives is a key feature of the White Paper. Australia will focus on getting more children into school for longer and for a better quality education. Increased health assistance will focuses on basic services for women and children and on tackling major diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. Countries that demonstrate improved governance will be rewarded with an increase of up to 10 per cent of their aid allocation.

The Australian Government is committed to responding effectively to the global recession. AusAID has developed a strategic Action Plan for responding to the Global Recession which sets out to protect current achievements in poverty reduction and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and to support an early, sustainable return to growth. Priority will be given to generating employment and restoring growth; supporting delivery of basic services, such as health care and education, to the poor; and protecting the vulnerable.
