Category:Learning Theory & Teaching Practice  Lifelong Learning Research

This report is the outcome of a project whose purpose was to research adult and community education (ACE) pedagogies in order to gain a better understanding of the connection between pedagogical practices and generic skill outcomes and to tease out the ways in which the practices and the pedagogical culture of ACE interact to produce a 'complex tangle'of outcomes. Over recent years there has been increasing interest by employers, policy-makers and researchers in 'generic skills', also known as 'employability skills', 'life skills', 'key competencies', 'skills and attributes' or 'lifelong learning skills'. The research described in this report is an investigation of the pedagogies and contexts that are characteristic in ACE, and that foster and develop generic skills and attributes amongst ACE learners.

This paper by Paul Armstrong of the University of London proposes that, globally, informal lifelong learning outside of education institutions is often neglected and that cultures of learning must recognise and value a wide range of informal learning. In popular culture, soap operas have both intentionally and unintentionally been sites for learning and their significance needs to be more thoroughly researched.

Are individual learners' the forgotten stakeholders?  EdNA Evaluated Page (click for item metadata)
URL:http://avetra.org.au/documents/57-Stallard.pdf
Category:Learning Theory & Teaching Practice

This paper was presented at the Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association (AVETRA) 2007 Conference. The aim of the research is to identify practices and theory in vocational education and training (VET) teaching practice that have the most impact on quality VET outcomes. Learners are the focus of teaching practice in VET. Three key themes emerge. They are: learning styles is only one important factor when assessing individual needs; VET practitioners value learning through reflection on their practice; and the need to develop a knowledge bank that supports evidence based data on teaching practice. This paper also includes a model of a VET Learning Environment that includes 'not only the known but all potential sources of learning through external information, career guidance, industry and the workplace'.
