This Evidence into Action Topical Paper, prepared for the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth, reports on research undertaken with the aim of demonstrating strategies for successful inclusion into Australian society of children and families from culturally and linguistically different (CaLD) backgrounds. Some of these programmes operate culturally specific services, with staff of the same cultural background as the clients of the programme; whilst a number of successful programmes operate with a multicultural focus.

A non-profit organisation, providing information, support and advocacy for children with a disability and their families, in Victoria, Australia. Some of the services include parent support, community education and advice to government. The News and Activities section of the site presents relevant information from other organisations and the government, and the bi-monthly magazine of the Association includes information on the latest development in the disability area. Aurora School is a Victorian Department of Education School which specialises in Early Intervention and Early Education programs for Deaf children and Deafblind children. The Early Intervention Program aims to provide parents with the support, knowledge and skills they need to promote their children's development, especially their communication and language development, during the early years. The Early Education Program specialises in education programs for young deaf children from three years of age. The Deafblind Education Program offers specialised education for students aged three to eighteen years, who have visual and hearing impairments and communication difficulties.

Research by Playgroup Australia confirms the enormous benefit that families receive from playgroups developed specifically for children diagnosed with autism. The PlayConnect environment allows children to engage in play, and their parents to meet others in the same situation. In this first issue of the Social Barometer series, the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL) seeks to add to the literature highlighting the disadvantages facing some of Australia's children. 'The Social Barometer: Children's Chances' presents indicators of children's capabilities and childhood disadvantage. Each of the six dimensions reflects basic capabilities that every child should be free to develop, including to have good health, to read and write, to control one's thoughts and emotions, to be free from violence and abuse, and to have access to an adequate level of economic resources.
