AARNet's mirror archive was established as a pilot project in 1998 as as a recommendation for a Large Object Cache from the AARNet2 Caching and Mirroring working group. It aims to provide cost savings on international traffic and improved performance to frequently accessed archives to AARNet's members. Mirror.AARNet now provides a large coverage of OpenSource, Sysadmin and Academically related archives to AARNet members, including UNIX sources and applications, Linux, PC and Macintosh software and internet documents such as RFCs and FAQs. Benefits of using using the AARNet Mirror: it costs your University less, ensures that AARNet will continue offering the service, and chances are it will be a lot quicker to access than overseas sites, since it is located here in Australia.

AARNet2, the second generation of the Australian Academic and Research Network, provides high capacity Internet services between eight state- and territory-based regional network hubs. The regional networks provide Internet service to Australia's universities and research institutions such as CSIRO, DSTO, ANSTO and AIMS. AARNet Pty Ltd provides a core of management, technical and administrative expertise for the operation and development of the network. The regional network organisations, funded and staffed by the AARNet members, call on this expertise to deliver a world-class academic and research network to members' sites.

AARLIN is an ARC funded project aiming to provide a integrated access to information resources for students and staff in higher education. The Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) has recognised the importance of this development, which is a priority project in its Strategic Plan for 1999 to 2005. The AARLIN portal project emerged from a CAUL strategic planning workshop in 1999, and was adopted as one of the strategic objectives of CAUL. The aim of the ARLIN project is, in its broadest sense, to develop an academic libraries network to facilitate resource sharing among Australian university libraries. It aims to
