The main sources are the statistical collections of the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. The contents of the publication allow anyone interested in Australian immigration or population history to study the process of change that occurred in the population in the 20th century.

The National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention was announced in November 2001. It was established to consider whether Australia's immigration detention laws and its treatment of children in immigration detention comply with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Inquiry received substantial evidence about the treatment of children in immigration detention centres between 1999 and 2002. This Report sets out the major findings and recommendations of the Inquiry. It also analyses the various rights to which children in immigration detention are entitled to such as: safety, mental and physical health, education, recreation, religion and culture. It also assesses temporary protection visas and explains the key principles that should guide the development of new laws applying to children who arrive in Australia without a visa.

In 2002, representatives of the Australia Library and Information Association visited six immigration detention centres on Australia's mainland and found that the current provision of library and information services for detainees is ad hoc, variable, inefficient and provides poor outcomes for detainees. Detention centres visited include Sydney (Villawood), Melbourne (Maribyrnong), Perth (WA), Woomera (SA), Port Hedland (WA) and Curtin (Derby WA). Report by Alan Bundy.
