Friends House for street children in Cambodia

Learning outcome

Students will investigate the experiences of, and empathise with, street children at Mith Samlanh/Friends House for street children and assess how programs improve their access to rights.

Discuss your knowledge of 'street children'. List some ideas about the daily lives of street children. What would their daily lives include and not include?

Read the case study Friends, programs for street children in Cambodia.

Draw a consequence chart showing:

  • How would living on the street affect children's lives?

Imagine you are one of the street children who is being assisted by Mith Samalanh /Friends.

Describe a typical day in either a letter to a friend, a diary extract, a short story, a poem or a drawing. Include details about what you have learnt and your hopes for the future.

Research street children in your own community.

Discuss:
List some similarities and differences between the experiences of street children in Australia and and street children in Cambodia.

  • Why might children become street children?
  • What programs help street children to improve their access to their rights?
Assessment task

Create a poster highlighting the rights of street children and activities that can support them.
