Literacy rates and gender

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students will analyse statistics to compare the life situations of people in East Timor (Timor-Leste) and Australia.

Use the latest Human Development Report http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/ to fill out the statistics in the following table. Then create graphs.
Graphs could also be created using the statistics and tools for the latest UNICEF State of the world’s children report http://www.unicef.org/publications/index.html

  East Timor/Timor-Leste
Australia
Life expectancy at birth
GDP per capita (PPP US $)
Population living below the national poverty line
Population, total
Fertility rate, total (births per woman)
Under-5 mortality rate
Population using an improved water source
Children under weight for age (% under age 5)
Public expenditure on education (% GDP)
Adult literacy rate, female
Adult literacy rate, male
Net primary enrolment rate
Maternal mortality ratio, adjusted (per 100,000 live births)
Seats in parliament (% held by women)

Write and discuss

  1. What do the statistics and graphs indicate about life in East Timor compared to life in Australia?
  2. What do the statistics and graphs indicate about life for women in East Timor compared to life for women in Australia?
  3. How do the statistics about women indicate their status in society?
  4. Do the statistics indicate a relationship between the literacy rates of women and the number of children they have? (you may have to investigate some other countries as well to investigate this relationship)

Assessment task

Use the statistics to evaluate the priorities of the East Timorese government’s spending on health and education to improve the lives of their people.
