Year level: Lower secondary
- Learning outcomes
-
Students develop an understanding of the current conflicts and the international
response.
|
Brainstorm places around the world where there is current conflict.
Use the news reports and the Internet to make a more complete list of places where there is conflict. Use this link to start http://ci.columbia.edu/ci/tools/0811_tools.html
Discuss
- How do the two lists compare?
- Why might they differ?
- Why would some places receive little media attention?
Research in small groups, a current conflict.
Write a short description of the country listing the reasons for the conflict, who is involved, and what international mechanisms to address the conflict are in place. As a group discuss whether the response might lead to peace and other methods which could be used to stop the conflict and build peace.
Create a class map with each description connected to the affected country/countries involved in the conflict. Each group should present their recommendations for building peace.
Imagine the class is on the United Nations Security Council. What recommendations
would you make for assisting the negotiation of peace in one of these conflicts?
- Assessment task
- Write a short report about the effectiveness of international responses to current conflicts with a recommendation for improvement.
