Global Education  /  Global Issues  /  Australia's aid program  /  Teaching activities  /  What are you going to do?

What are you going to do?

Year level: Upper primary/Lower secondary

Learning outcomes

Students identify and explore values behind giving aid

Discuss how you would respond to the following situations:

  • Your friend is locked out of their house.
  • You are the first on the scene of an accident between two cars in which both drivers are injured.
  • You read about a child your age in your community who is orphaned.
  • You read about a child your age in a community overseas who is missing out on school because they have to work to support their family..

Discuss:

  • Why would you help in this way?
  • What might stop you helping?
  • What are the consequences if you do not help?
  • Who else might help?

Brainstorm situations in which you and your family might depend on others for assistance (eg needing directions to find a place, house burnt down)

Discuss:

  • Who helps? Why?
  • How does it feel to be helped?
  • What would be most helpful?
  • How does this make you think about others who need help?
Assessment task

Write or present an argument for supporting a particular organisation or issue to your peers or school community.
