Global EdNet

Global EdNet is the global education website email discussion group. It is open to all teachers and others interested in the teaching of global education in Australian schools for the sharing of news, events and discussion of global education issues, resources and ideas.

How to respond to natural disasters in our region

It is a great shock to hear about the devastation and loss of lives in our region over the last week.

  • Typhoon Ketsana, moving west has flooded Manilla and hit central Vietnam
  • A tsunami generated by an undersea 8.0 magnitude earthquake near Samoa struck Samoa, American Samoa and parts of Tonga
  • A 7.6-magnitude earthquake in West Sumatra has killed more than 500 people and injured hundreds

We all want to help but the best way to help is by donating money to organisations that are skilled in delivering emergency relief.

Money can be allocated according to need, e.g. to purchase goods locally, support leaders and communities, or provide life saving relief such as medicine or food.

The following websites have useful information.

The AusAID website outlines what the Australian government is doing, how you can help and links to other organisations.

The Global education website has materials about managing disasters in general, teaching activities for understanding emergency relief and fund raising and case studies including one about disaster preparedness programs conducted by SurfAid on the islands off the coast of Sumatra.
