Emergency relief

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning Outcome:

Students develop an understanding of some of the complexities involved in responding to a natural disaster.

Read a report of a recent disaster form the media or an aid agency.

Imagine you are leading a team of emergency workers (eg search and rescue, health, water and sanitation, food, shelter) working as part of an emergency relief project for the disaster.

Write a report describing your assessment of the situation.

Identify the main responses (services and materials) you would provide to help the situation. Justify your choices and rank them in order of importance.

Include

  • What resources (people and money) would you need to undertake these responses?
  • What problems might you encounter in providing these services?
  • What measures would you take to overcome these problems?
  • What future preparedness could you build into your response?

Create a role play. Allocate the roles of the key personnel in the emergency team among your small group and discuss how you will coordinate yourselves and the available resources to ensure that your responses are effective.

Assessment task

Evaluate the outcomes of the responses developed in your role-play using the Sphere criteria outlined on http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/go/pid/308
