Responding to a natural disaster

Year level: Lower secondary

Learning Outcome:

Students develop an understanding of the general response to natural disasters

Read about the response to the Gujarati earthquake in India http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/page1248.html
or a current natural disaster using news and web reports.

  • What happened?
  • How many people were affected?
  • How was property affected?
  • How was the environment affected?
  • Who responded and how?
  • What obstacles to the response might have been encountered?
  • What lessons might have been learned that could make the response to future disasters more effective?

Develop a dramatisation based on your research of interactions between people affected by the disaster and those involved in the response: survivors, search and rescue, medical personnel, distribution of food, shelter and clothing, government official, media personnel etc

Compare the similarities and differences in responses to different disasters.
