Children's Rights Glossary

 
Active citizenship
Understanding your rights and responsibilities as a citizen, and having the skills and confidence to put them into practice.
 
Participation
Taking an active part in the decisions and services that affect you from voicing your views to the people in charge of your local services (eg health and education), to taking action to change your community, to voting in local and national elections.
Right
An abstract idea of that which is due to a person or governmental body by law or tradition or nature
 
State
The supreme law making authority within a sovereign jurisdiction or country.
 
United Nations Convention
A legally binding international agreement to which a country commits itself (eg children’s rights, human rights, torture).

United Nations Declaration
A morally binding agreement initiated by the United Nations of a series of principles that guide behaviour on a specific subject (eg children's rights, human rights, torture).
