Implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students will expand their knowledge of the United Nations and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Write a definition of 'rights' and list some examples.

Group these rights under the headings:

  • Civil and political rights
  • Social and economic rights

Read the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at http://www.unicef.org/crc/index.htm

Discuss:
Why do children need a specific convention to protect their rights?

Select one of the themes outlined at http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/go/pid/26 that make up the CRC.

Collect a series of news reports or magazine articles about people under 18 years old in Australia and list the Articles of the CRC that are described in these texts.

Make an assessment about the access of all people under 18 years in Australia to the rights listed in the CRC.

Review the reports on Australia's implementation on the Convention on the Rights of the Child at http://www.ohchr.org/english/

Assessment task

Investigate and write a report to the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights about children's access to rights in Australia.
