Picture books

Picture storybooks, based on global themes, set in other countries or written by people of different backgrounds, offer a great resource for integrating global perspectives across the curriculum. They help us tackle difficult issues in a positive and realistic way. Students can make links between their own experience and those of others. They gain insight into many ways of living and viewing the world.

Use picture storybooks to develop a cross-curricula global perspective in:

  • The Arts through: examining and experimenting with the colour, design and style of illustrations, discussing the form and impact of artistic styles; researching music and dance to accompany or retell the story.
  • English through: examining narrative form; reading and retelling; discussing characters (e.g. similarities and differences, agree or disagree with them); discussing plot development; rewriting with a different ending; draw charts to show links between people in the story and/or their own world.
  • Social education through examining the underlying themes: community organisation; daily life; power and authority; relationships between people, land, and/or time.
