Waste summit

Year level: Upper primary/Lower secondary

Learning outcomes

Students consider waste management issues from a variety of perspectives.

Read the case study The Power of Many: Waste Management in Wewak, PNG

Role-play Imagine you are one of the people attending the Waste Summit to decide how to manage the waste in Wewak. Share the roles with others in the class. Think about what this person would think about the problem and ways to manage the waste. Set up a formal meeting with the President of the East Sepik Council of Women chairing the meeting. The Summit needs to make a series of recommendations to which all parties agree. Students without an active role should be community members attending the meeting. They may be invited to ask questions or vote at the end of the meeting.

  • President of the East Sepik Council of Women
  • Mayor of Town Commission
  • Environmental officer
  • Waste management officer
  • Health inspector
  • Settlement leader
  • Mother from the settlement with young children
  • Student at Mongniol school
  • Unemployed person making a living from collecting items for sale from the dump
  • Recycling company

To make it formal the class might:

  • form a committee to organise the Summit
  • select two people to record the Summit proceedings
  • select a small group to prepare a short report on the Summit

Debrief your roles

  • How did you feel in this role?
  • Did you agree with the outcomes of the meeting? Why or why not?
  • Do you think people at the meeting in Wewak would have felt this way?
Assessment task

Analyse how one action discussed could be used to manage waste more effectively in your community.
