For and against globalisation

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students will examine views about globalisation.

Brainstorm your ideas about globalisation. Group the issues to decide on the key themes.

Create a Plus/Minus/Unsure chart for each theme, which should assist you in considering how globalisation affects your life.
Are you in favour or against globalisation?

Read the Background to Globalisation at http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/page178.html. Does this alter your opinions about globalisation?

In pairs, select one of the numbered issues from the boxes outlining the benefits and problems of globalisation.

Discuss : How do these statements interact with each other?
Each take one of the opposing statements and research information to support it

Write a rebuttal for the points made.

Compare your findings with your partner and discuss.

Decide, as a pair, your response to globalisation.

Discuss as a large group and decide whether you are more in favour or less in favour of globalisation than initially and why.

Assessment task

Write an assessment of the positive and negative issues surrounding globalisation on an identified key theme such as economic growth, poverty reduction, environmental impact, expansion of technology, or cultural imperialism.
