Managing waste in PNG

Year level: Upper primary/Lower secondary

Learning outcomes

Students make links between lifestyle, waste creation and management based on their own experiences and on case studies.

Read the case study The Power of Many and answer the following questions:

  • What benefits and problems have imported goods had on the lives of people in Wewak?
  • What problems are there from managing the waste from imported goods by using traditional methods?
  • How could the waste from imported goods be recycled or managed differently?
  • What impact does the waste have on the environment?
  • What impact does the waste have on people's health?

Create a cartoon strip comparing the types of waste produced and how they are managed by the people in Wewak and the people in your community.

Debate

Should those who have produced the waste be responsible for its disposal?

Assessment task

Write three things that you have learnt about the difficulties of managing waste in PNG.
