Expanding educational opportunities

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students will develop an understanding of the impact education on human development.

Read Education Background and one of the Case Studies at http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/page1508.html

Develop a list of things that might prevent children gaining an education.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the programs in the Case Studies in addressing the particular issues featured.

Undertake research to find out about programs in Australia that address the special needs of students (eg poverty, remoteness, disability, family disruptions, homelessness, lack of resources in a school).

Evaluate how effective these approaches are.

Discuss

  • Why might meeting these needs be more difficult in developing countries?
  • What other factors might influence the needs of students in developing countries?

Examine the education figures of the countries related to the case study you have read. Countries available at: http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/

Make some general observations about the differences between these countries and identify factors which may have contributed to the differences between them.

Write a report for the Australian government commenting on their education aid funding in the light of your examinations.

Assessment task

Describe how limited educational opportunities impact on an individual and their community.
