The overall objective of the Australian government's aid program is to advance Australia's national interest by helping developing countries to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development. The program's income-generation strategy in rural areas has three components: increasing the productivity of the agricultural sector, stimulating non-farm employment and managing natural resources sustainably. The aid program also includes the provision of basic needs and services in rural areas through its education, governance, health and infrastructure programs.
