Gender equality case studies

  • Livestock and livelihoods: escaping poverty in rural China  : CARE Australia staff train poor rural village women in animal husbandry and fruit tree growing in Du An, China. Improving women's knowledge and skills leads to an increase in family income, health and welfare
  • Women and fisheries  : The Marshall Islands Women Fisheries Development (WFD) Project aims to increase involvement of women from coastal fishing communities in regional and national fisheries development activities, and enhance their income generation opportunities.
  • Words into action  : Empowering women through literacy and education in East Timor

Ten years on from independence in East Timor much is being done to improve the status of women, including new legislation to ensure 30 per cent female representation in parliament. Australia's aid program in East Timor has a strong gender focus. One example of this is in the justice sector, where AusAID is supporting civil society organisations that address violence against women and improve access to information and services.
