Reconstruction planning

Year level: Upper primary/Lower secondary

Learning Outcome:

Students will appreciate the complexity of planning a reconstruction program following a natural disaster.

Imagine you are working for AusAID to help a village rebuild and gain hope for the future.

  • There are only 1,200 of the previous 3,000 inhabitants left in this village
  • The survivors have been given emergency food, packs of clothing, soap and towels and are temporarily housed in tents.
  • Your AusAID provided budget is A$750,000
  • Your objective is to provide assistance to reconstruct the village and achieve sustainable development for the community

Organise into groups of five. Each member of the group will have one of the following roles:

  • AusAID project officer
  • Government official
  • Child from the village
  • Man from the village
  • Woman from the village

Prepare a plan to reconstruct the village and achieve sustainable development for the community.

Make sure you assist all members of the village and not just one group.

Submit a project report in a format of your choice, for example a written report, a video recording or a reconstruction handbook.

Assessment Task:

Write a media release describing the reconstruction plan and who it will assist.
