What is adequate housing?

Year level: Lower primary/Middle primary

Learning outcome

Students will make generalisations about what is adequate housing through research and discussion.

Draw a labelled diagram of a house with all the things that make it liveable.

Indicate with arrows the goods and services that come in and go out (eg food, electricity, garbage disposal).

Compare your diagrams with those of others. How do they differ?

Add or delete any items you think are important after hearing what others have decided.

Research, in small groups, homes in another place:

  • What are they built of?
  • How big are they?
  • What rooms do they have?
  • How close are they to their neighbours?
  • What services do they have?
  • How are they adapted for the climate and lifestyle of the people who live in them?

Draw a labelled diagram of the house your group has researched.

Present the diagram to the class.

Discuss

  • How are the houses similar?
  • How are the houses different?
  • What factors influence these differences?
  • What is an adequate home?
  • What happens if people do not have an adequate home?

Review your original drawing and add or delete any items you think are important as a result of your research and discussion.

Assessment task

Draw a labelled diagram of a house you would like to live in, highlighting the reasons why each feature has been included.
