Using the media

In developing global citizens we seek to promote relevant knowledge and understanding, encourage positive values and attitudes, develop critical skills in dealing with information and communication and foster a commitment to action and participation.

Global Perspectives: A statement on global education for Australian schools http://www.globaleducation.edna.edu.au/globaled/page122.html

The media is a great source of information for exploring these qualities of global citizenship. Through television, newspapers and the internet we are awash with information about events around the world. This makes our job as global educators both, easier and harder. Easier because there is plenty of information, including text, photos, graphs, maps, and, if we dig far enough, it represents a range of perspectives. The extent of the information can make understanding the world harder as there are no easy answers for the complex issues that we face and students need to be taught how to decode the information and active citizenship skills.

Here are some quick ideas for using media to add a global perspective in the classroom across the curriculum and for engaging students with the real world :

  • English: levels of questioning (comprehension, interpretation, comparison etc) analyse the perspective presented and note the voices which are missing, rewrite an article in a different format or from a different point of view
  • Mathematics: plot the frequency of items about particular place or issue, interpret the statistics used
  • SOSE/HSIE: locate places on a map, compare different points of view, develop an action plan for change, survey others about an issue, create a role play around the issues, debate how an issue should be addressed
  • ICT: develop a class newspaper, radio or television news broadcast
  • The Arts: create cartoon, photographs, poems or music to interpret the issue from alternative points of view
  • Technology: design, test and construct items that are described, address problems identified; research and evaluate how technology is used to address an issue in other cultures

Send us your ideas about using the media in your classroom through our discussion group, Global EdNet available at:
