Students demonstrate
knowledge of the symptoms, treatment and preventative measures to deal with malaria |
Brainstorm ideas about being bitten by mosquitoes. - When
do mosquitoes bite?
- What does a mosquito bite feel like? (both at the
time and after being bitten)
- What can you do to stop mosquitoes biting?
- What can you do if you are bitten by a mosquito?
Read
the section about malaria in the case study Managing mozzies: The Pacific Regional
Vector Borne Disease Project
Answer
the following questions: - What is malaria?
- What does it feel
when you have malaria?
- What can you do to stop getting malaria?
Create
a role-play about preventing and treating malaria. For example, you might
show people spraying their homes, clearing stagnant water, sleeping under a mosquito
net. Find a malaria map that shows which countries are affected by
malaria, eg.
http://gamapserver.who.int/mapLibrary/Files/Maps/global_cases.jpg
- What
might all these countries have in common?
- What is similar about the climate
of these countries?
- What is similar about the economies of these countries?
- Why
might people in these countries have difficulty preventing and treating malaria?
Imagine
you were visiting one of these countries.
Write a postcard about your
experience with malaria.
For example, you might describe what you have done
to avoid malaria and someone you have met who has malaria.
- Assessment task
-
Design a board game
called 'Conquering Mozzies!' or design and create a user-friendly health education
pamphlet to be distributed among villagers, outlining how to prevent the occurrence
of malaria.
