Vector-borne diseases

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students demonstrate knowledge of the distribution, symptoms, treatment and preventative measures to deal with vector-borne diseases.

Brainstorm what you know about vector-borne diseases (malaria, dengue, lymphatic filariasis).

Read the case study Managing mozzies, The Pacific Regional Vector Borne Disease Project.

  • Where do malaria, dengue and lymphatic filariasis occur most frequently?
  • What are the main factors which allow the spread of these vector-borne diseases?

Create a web map for each disease showing how it spreads, and treatment and prevention activities.

Add further information gained from the Internet, books, interviewing knowledgeable people etc.

Imagine you the Health Minister for one of the Pacific Island countries.

List at least five cost-effective strategies you can take to continue controlling vector-borne diseases once the outside project money is no longer available.

Prioritise these activities.

Assessment task

Create an radio or television program which interviews various 'experts' on the best way the Australian Government can assist Pacific Island countries to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases.
