Recovering from the tsunami

Year level: Lower secondary Learning outcome Students will investigate long-term recovery from the Indian Ocean tsunami. Read the case study A wave of destruction, Australia's response to the Indian Ocean tsunami in Aceh. Create a flow chart to show the progress of the emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction stages in responding to one aspect of the tsunami in Aceh. Write a diary description of the event as if you were one of the survivors. Create a model or map showing how the tsunami spread out across the affected area. Include photos and annotate your work with the action being taken to assist in recovery. Write a short newspaper report describing some current reconstruction activities in Aceh based on the links at the end of the case study. Your report should answer the following questions: What reconstruction activities are happening? Why are these activities a priority? How do these activities contribute to long-term recovery? How are problems being overcome? Create a graphic, cartoon strip or song to educate people about what to do if they receive a tsunami warning. Include information on when to respond, what constitutes safe shelter, and the care of children, the elderly and pets.
