Recovering from the tsunami

Year level: Lower secondary

Learning outcome

Students will investigate long-term recovery from the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Read the case study A wave of destruction, Australia's response to the Indian Ocean tsunami in Aceh.

Create a flow chart to show the progress of the emergency relief, recovery and reconstruction stages in responding to one aspect of the tsunami in Aceh.

Write a diary description of the event as if you were one of the survivors.

Create a model or map showing how the tsunami spread out across the affected area. Include photos and annotate your work with the action being taken to assist in recovery.

Write a short newspaper report describing some current reconstruction activities in Aceh based on the links at the end of the case study. Your report should answer the following questions:

What reconstruction activities are happening?

Why are these activities a priority?

How do these activities contribute to long-term recovery?

How are problems being overcome?

Create a graphic, cartoon strip or song to educate people about what to do if they receive a tsunami warning. Include information on when to respond, what constitutes safe shelter, and the care of children, the elderly and pets.

Assessment task

Select the activity you think is the most important for assisting people to rebuild their lives with confidence. Write a short persuasive paragraph outlining three reasons why you think this is the most important activity.
