Human rights teaching activities

The suggested activities help students get to know the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights and how people around the world enjoy these rights. They can be adapted to different year levels and current events. Use Rights for all to introduce the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and follow it up with other activities such as Equality and discrimination and Rights and responsibilities, and encourage an active response with Right the wrongs.

  • Equality and discrimination (UP/LS)  : Students investigate the consequences of unequal treatment based on gender, race or religious beliefs in relation to the Universal Declaration on Human Rights
  • Improving the lives of women in Solomon Islands (LS)  : Students will examine how lives can be improved through human rights education.
  • Learning about rights in Bangladesh (U/Sec)  : Students will examine the Popular Theatre program as a means of teaching people in rural communities about their rights.
  • Rights for all (LS)  : Students will examine the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and compare its implementation in a different country
  • Right on! (LP)  : Students will investigate how they experience the rights of access to basic needs, fairness and safety
  • Rights profiling (MP)  : Students will develop an understanding of human rights through designing a calendar of activities for observing the international days associated with the protection of human rights
  • Right the wrongs (MP/US)  : Students will investigate, plan and implement an advocacy program to improve access to human rights for a selected group
