Teachers as peace builders

Year level: Lower secondary

Learning outcome

Students will analyse the role of teachers as change agents in rebuilding society after conflict.

Read Let’s begin with the children

Imagine that you and your family had been caught in the violence of the conflict in Sierra Leone and are now rebuilding your lives.

Write a story or create a drama with a small group which addresses the following questions:

  • How did the conflict affect your family?
  • How have the peace agreement and the UN peacekeepers changed the situation in your community?
  • How has peace education changed what happens at school?
  • How have you put into practice what you have learnt in peace education in your relationships with your friends and family?

Read your story or perform your drama for the class.

Discuss

  • what you have learnt about peace building
  • how you might put this into practice in your own life.
Assessment task

Write a letter to a student in one of the Sierra Leonean peace education schools describing your feelings and ideas about the changes in their school. Suggest a way you might support students in Sierra Leone as peace builders.
