Taking flight

Year level: Lower Primary/ Middle Primary

Learning outcomes
Students will to develop empathy for people escaping conflict though book discussion.

Share experiences of moving house or packing for a holiday.
Discuss reasons for moving and how they felt about the change.

Read a book such as Refugees by David Miller (which tells the story of the journey two ducks have when bulldozers arrive to prepare their swamp for the building of a new housing estate).

Discuss:
What disturbed the ducks?
Why were they disturbed?
How did the ducks feel?
How did the other characters in the story feel?
What would the ducks need to be peaceful again?
How would you help the ducks feel peaceful again?

Create a map or story to show the ducks’ journey with comments about how the ducks may have felt along the way.

Assessment task
Role play the story of the ducks. Add a conclusion reflecting on how the ducks and the people may have been able to reach a different and fairer outcome for all.
