Fabric findings

Year level: Middle primary/ Upper primary

Learning outcome

Students will examine the characteristics of the fabrics of their clothes.

Read the background information about growing and producing fibres and fabrics.
Which fibres are most commonly used for making clothes? Why might this be so?

Define these words in relation to fabrics – ‘crushability’, ‘water absorption’, ‘shine’, ‘stretchiness’, ‘smooth’, ‘coarse’.

Survey your clothes – this might involve taking a photo for use in your table.
Create a table which records what fibre they are made of.
Graph your clothes according to the fibre.

Add to the table and special features about them for example: Which clothes are more comfortable to wear? Which clothes wear best? Which clothes require particular care in washing and removing creases? Where has the fibre been grown and processed?

Assessment task

Use the information you have to make a recommendation about the most important characteristics for making clothes.
