Every year since 1990, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has commissioned the Human Development Report by an independent team of experts to explore major issues of global concern. The concept of Human Development looks beyond per capita income, human resource development, and basic needs as a measure of human progress and also assesses such factors as human freedom, dignity and human agency, that is, the role of people in development.

The United Nations Cyberschoolbus is a website about global issues and the UN for students aged 5-18 and their teachers. Educational resources provide information on different countries and the United Nations, as well as games and puzzles. Teaching resources for curriculum areas such as cities, diseases and telecommunications are also included.

In PNG it examines the volcanic eruptions at Rabaul; and the use of biological agents to control Water Hyacinth weed. In Vietnam it looks at reducing the incidence of dengue fever; and the use of iodised salt to address iodine deficiency.

In Australia's International HIV/AIDS Strategy July 2004, Australia re-examines its approach to assisting developing countries to combat HIV/AIDS. Australia will continue to have a strong focus on HIV/AIDS in the Asia-Pacific region, and will aim to: reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS; and mitigate the effects on people living with HIV/AIDS and on the society to which they belong. Australia's response will be guided by past experience and tailored to individual country circumstances.
